In ‘Oranges for Sissy’, set in the aftermath of the Greek Civil War, we follow Sissy, the daughter of political refugees in Albania, as she and her family flee to Greece after the death of her father. Sissy grows up in the custody of state-run homes where she blossoms into a young adolescent and eventually a prostitute and brothel owner. The narrative is told in the first person by her gay lover, who has immigrated to the USA in an attempt to get over her. Sissy’s course in life mirrors social and political developments in post-war Greece.
